Position Summary:
The Nutrition Program Specialist is primarily responsible for providing clinical nutrition counseling to undergraduate and graduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows and eligible spouses. The position requires excellent clinical skills in medical nutrition therapy in the areas of hypertension, diabetes including gestational diabetes, lipid management, eating disorders, weight management, endocrine disorders including polycystic ovarian syndrome, as well as other medical nutrition disorders. Certification as a diabetes educator or willingness to obtain certification is highly desirable. In addition, the nutrition program specialist will collaborate with Health Promotion and Wellness nutritional staff by assisting with program planning and implementation of primary prevention and intervention programs in the area of nutrition for the student population. The Program Specialist will be responsible for teaching activities both inside and outside of the classroom.

Education Requirements:
Must be a registered Dietician able to practice within the State of North Carolina.

Qualifications and Experience:
Understanding of issues of diversity; demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in promoting respect for diversity and pluralism among students and staff is required. Experience and interest in eating disorders is necessary and the ability to utilize technology in the delivery of student programs is preferred. A Certificate in Diabetes Education or the willingness to become certified is highly desirable.

Job Opportunity: Associate in Research

General Description

The Associate in Research position will be responsible for giving support to the DGHI-based North Carolina Health Disparities Fellowship Program and to one or two DGHI faculty with various research projects related to health and nutrition. The position is based in Durham, North Carolina, but will require out-of-state and international travel.

Work performed:

Coordination of North Carolina Health Disparities Fellowship Program
With support from the NC Health and Wellness Trust fund, DGHI manages a two-year Fellowship program for mid-to senior-level community health professionals in North Carolina.

Responsibilities:
• Work independently and with a team to plan, prepare and carry out all fellowship activities and assignments
• Serve as liaison to Fellowship participants and troubleshoot issues as they arise
• Serve as primary contact with the NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund grant officer
• Prepare quarterly reports to NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund
• Coordinate selection of Class 2 of the Fellowship Program
• Serve as coordinator of DGHI Fellowship team and coordinate all meetings, materials and timelines to ensure successful execution of Fellowship plan
• Serve as primary contact with Fellowship mentors
• Work with DGHI staff to process reimbursement for expenses incurred by Fellows, Mentors, and Fellowship Team
• Serve as on-site coordinator for all in-person Fellowship meetings and distance learning sessions
• Coordinate all logistics for in-person meetings, including housing, meals, meeting space, materials, etc.

Research Support

The Associate in Research will be giving support to up to two DGHI faculty members in their respective areas of work including epidemiologic and intervention research focuses on maternal and child nutrition and possible work in Rwanda on strengthening medical education.

The general responsibilities will include:

• Provide technical support to Institute faculty undertaking research in these areas with support of the Institute (e.g. coordinate domestic and international primary data collection efforts and manage study data).
• Prepare sections for new research and research training grant applications and supplements, IRB applications and other related materials.
• Prepare annual progress reports to NIH and other funding agencies on research and research training grants for which DGHI Faculty Members are PI.
• Prepare sections of journal articles, book chapters and other scientific papers and conduct the necessary literature searches required for their preparation.
• Effectively summarize reported research findings on priority GH issues, and their applicability to the GH Institute’s research activities.
• Write summaries and articles on the research activities of the GH Institute for interested funding agencies and the quarterly Institute newsletter.
• Supervise research assistants and support staff, as required.

Education and experience:

• Master’s degree in a related discipline (e.g., epidemiology, nutrition, microbiology, sociology, psychology, maternal and child health, and public health) and at least three years of relevant experience; or a doctoral degree in a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience undertaking research projects in global health related areas. Experience in writing grant proposals and quantitative methods are highly desirable.
• Knowledge of global health.

• Strong administrative and organizational skills.
• Outstanding initiative and ability to work independently and solve problems creatively
• Excellent ability to set priorities among multiple tasks.

Adjunct Faculty at NYCC

POSITION: Adjunct Faculty – Two (2) Positions

DEPARTMENT: Master of Science in Applied Clinical Nutrition

DIVISION: Academic Affairs

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Director of the School of Applied Clinical Nutrition, members of the faculty are responsible for the instruction of the applied clinical nutrition curriculum to the masters students enrolled at NYCC. Members of the faculty may also participate in College governance, scholarly activities and professional development and research activities as time and interest allow.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Teaching

As lead instructor in a course the faculty member has the primary responsibility for developing the course syllabi, instructional materials, examinations, and for maintaining accurate classroom performance records for each student. The incoming fall 2009 class will receive face-to-face classroom instruction for the full two-year program. However, starting with the incoming fall 2010 class instruction will be through an online medium. Instructors are expected to teach one more round of on-ground learning and then transition with the program to the online format.

All faculty members are responsible for advising students with regard to their coursework and progress through NYCC’s program as well as proctor exams and grade assigned papers/projects or presentations.

Grading assists (recruited and approved by the Director and the faculty member) will assist faculty members with grading assignments when more than 30 written assignments are submitted per assignment. The faculty member will use the School of Applied Clinical Nutrition rubric as the guideline with clear, written, modifications supplied to the students and grading assists at the time of the assignment.

Faculty may also be asked to assist in the College’s recruitment of new students.

2. Governance

Faculty members may participate in the daily operation of the College as well as contribute to short and long range planning by actively working on various College committees and by attendance at Faculty Senate meetings.

Working with the Director, collaborate and assist in the establishment of the School of Applied Clinical Nutrition’s priorities, goals, policies and procedures consistent with the mission of the school, and the division of Academic Affairs and the College.

3. Scholarly Activity and Research

On an ongoing basis faculty members are required to keep current with developments in their field of expertise as well as changes in the nutrition field. Faculty members are to engage in continuing education that relates to both teaching and personal/professional development.

As time and interest allow, faculty members are to participate in research which is relevant to the program at NYCC or to their field of expertise. This research may be privately funded and/or sanctioned and funded by the College.

QUALIFICATIONS

At least one of the following degrees is required: D.C., M.D., Ph.D., N.M.D., D.O. or MSACN with documented expertise in the subject area. Previous or current private clinical nutrition practice experience strongly desired if teaching a clinical nutrition course. A demonstrated aptitude for teaching necessary, previous teaching experience is helpful. Post-graduate certification in nutrition is desirable.

Job Description: This is a nine-month tenure-track assistant or associate professor position in the Department of Nutrition and Food Systems. Responsibilities: Teach undergraduate and graduate nutrition courses, advise students, conduct research, pursue external funding, and provide service to the department, university, community, and profession.

Minimum Qualifications: An earned doctorate in nutrition or closely related field from an accredited institution is required by the time of appointment. Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor requires demonstrated research productivity including scholarly publications, presentations, and success in securing external funding.



Preferred Qualifications: Registered Dietitian credential; dietetics practice experience; demonstrated record of effective teaching in nutrition, food systems, and/or dietetics; demonstrated record of research productivity.

The Department of Nutrition and Food Systems is one of seven units in the College of Health. It includes 9 full-time tenure-track faculty and several part-time faculty. The Department offers accredited Bachelor of Science Didactic Program in Dietetics and Dietetic Internship, Master of Science and Ph.D. programs in applied Nutrition and Food Systems, and an online certificate program in School Nutrition Program Management.



Research foci include school nutrition and community based research targeting health disparities. The University of Southern Mississippi houses the Applied Research Division of the National Food Service Management Institute, which conducts research dedicated to improving operational effectiveness of school nutrition programs. 3-Teaching the parents 1 night a week for 1 hour. Lesson plans will be provided.
