Position Overview

The manager will develop and implement a sophisticated media effort, including paid and earned media, op-eds, online strategies, and events. The manager will work with consultants, project staff and our funding partners to develop and implement a comprehensive media, events and outreach strategy at the state and national level, complete with objectives, target audiences, messages, specific activities, events timeline and benchmarks for success. The activities will seek to educate three key audiences: 1) federal executive branch officials and targeted Members of Congress; 2) parents, schoolchildren and school personnel; and, 3) media, nonprofit allies and others able to reach a wide range of audiences. Citizen outreach will be designed to encourage constituents to make contact with decision makers in support of the campaign’s goals.

This position currently has an end date of April 2012. The project may be extended pending the success of the effort, board approval and additional funding.

Responsibilities:
Work with the project director and other campaign staff to develop and execute communications and events strategies that support and promote the campaign’s policy goals, including engaging parents, school children, school personnel and others to support the campaign’s objectives.
Develop and maintain strong ties to national and regional print, television, radio and online and strategically cultivate stories for the campaign.
Plan and implement events in target states and nationally to attract attention to the campaign’s policy goals, research, and call for action. This could include high-profile partnerships with companies that influence children’s eating habits, media outlets, the food industry, and nonprofit organization allies.
Manage outside vendor(s) who will design online strategies that engage citizens and nonprofit allies in supporting the campaign’s efforts and assure their effective implementation.
Build working relationships with media targets to pitch and ensure promotion of the campaign's three strategic priorities.
Oversee consultants, including communications and online networking specialists.
Write news releases, advisories, statements, and background briefing documents for reporters, broadcast producers and bloggers.
Set up in-person and telephone news conferences.
Write and edit fact sheets to reach both media and grassroots audiences.
Develop print and on-line communications materials to support the campaigns public outreach efforts.
Manage content on the campaign website.
Provide content and strategic input for advertisements created for the campaign.
Ensure effective coordination with funding partner’s communications and events staff.
Serve as a liaison with Pew’s communications department.
Support and collaborate on other PHG-related projects as necessary.

Requirements:
A minimum of eight years of progressively responsible communications, public relations and/or media relations experience with an agency, corporation or non-profit institution is required.
Health, food/nutrition science and/or public policy campaigns strongly preferred.
Skills associated with completion of an undergraduate degree program in Communications, Journalism or related major including understanding of media operations and news organizations, particularly broadcast media and Web based technologies,
Demonstrated experience managing state and national events and high-profile partnerships that generate media attention and grassroots action.

Additionally, the director will serve as the project’s main spokesperson and primary liaison with the campaign’s funding partners.

Responsibilities:
The Project Director will represent Pew before federal policy makers and with nonprofit organizations and funding partners. S/he will oversee a staff of five, including a communications manager, project manager, senior research associate, program associate and administrative assistant, and work in partnership with other Pew departments. The director will recruit and maintain superb relationships with the project’s consultants and working groups.

The specific deliverables for the campaign include:

Convene meetings USDA, industry, public health groups and others to develop model USDA rules for implementing the IOM and other evidence-based recommendations for foods sold in schools.
Provide public comments on the USDA’s proposed rules for school food and organize key allies and members of the public to submit comments.
Conduct and disseminate, as appropriate, one or more health impact assessments (HIAs) to inform the various policy decisions being made during Child Nutrition Reauthorization (CNR) implementation.
Organize meetings with members of Congress or their staff on relevant appropriations committees to advocate for increased funding for meal reimbursement, equipment and training.
Conduct focus groups and public opinion polling to help inform the development of the campaign’s communications strategy, tactics and message and, where appropriate, publicize the results through release to the print and broadcast media.
Broadly disseminate the project’s reports and calls for actions at public and policy forums, as well as electronically on a newly-created project Web site to educate policy makers and opinion leaders.
Engage parents, schoolchildren, school administrators and others to write, call or e-mail the USDA during the rulemaking process and to contact policy makers in support of the campaign’s funding goals.
Raise awareness of the need for school food reform and the project’s policy goals through traditional and new media communications.

Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have significant work experience with federal rulemaking and legislative processes, with a strong preference for experience with congressional appropriations. S/he should have a background in advocacy campaigns, including grassroots activity and media outreach. Expertise in health policy is strongly preferred and a background in school foods/nutrition policy would be helpful, though is not required. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to work with a wide array of staff, national experts, stakeholders, consultants and funders to develop and implement the strategy for a national advocacy campaign. Among the specific requirements for this position are:

At least 10–15 years of relevant professional experience, including a solid understanding of the federal policy-making process. Significant experience working with the federal government (including Congress and federal agencies) and with issue-based national advocacy groups is strongly preferred.
Knowledge and experience at a senior level with key tools in advocacy and policy change, including policy analysis, issue campaigns and communications strategies.
Able to oversee staff in setting short- and long-term planning goals in line with program strategy. A task-oriented style, with focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Able to develop and move projects forward with a high degree of independence and autonomy.
Excellent written and oral communications skills, including an ease in briefly summarizing the essence of issues and means to address them. Position Description: The trainee will function as a member of the Applied Research Program and work with scientists on projects related to the ARP mission specifically in energy balance including diet, weight, and physical activity initiatives. The trainee will work collaboratively in a support role with scientific staff at the National Cancer Institute in the design, development and evaluation of large-scale research initiatives and grant-related activities. It is anticipated the trainee will work on cross-cutting projects that include staff and agencies across HHS and NIH. Day-to-day activities will include project management and coordination, assisting with the development of funding opportunities; providing project support to large-scale and cross cutting initiatives including the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR), the NIH Obesity Research Task Force (NIH ORTF), and the HHS Healthy Weight initiative, and NIH support of the Let’s Move White House campaign; conducting searches and summarizing epidemiological evidence concerning energy balance and cancer endpoints, conducting portfolio analyses of NCI funded research related to energy balance, gathering and summarizing background information about scientific findings and health policy; participating in program meetings; and attending lectures and meetings sponsored by the NIH or other agencies. The Consumer Sciences Subject Group of the North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus,
South Africa is welcoming applications for the abovementioned position. The research team
consists of ten consumer scientists focusing their research on aspects of improving the
wellbeing of the South African consumer through consumer behaviour research. We approach

Your role would be:
Assisting in all aspects of research project on improving consumer wellbeing from
organization and planning of data collection to data analysis, manuscript preparation
and publication;
Writing funding applications;
Student supervision;
Field work (interviews, focus groups, questionnaires)
Your background:
Recently qualified PhD in Consumer Sciences or related areas;
Experience in consumer research and applied research methodology;
Some experience in field work;
Team player, highly motivated, enthusiastic personality.
This position is immediately available (or at the applicant’s earliest convenience) and is for an
initial period of 1 year, but can be extended up to three years. Salary is based on the current
postdoctoral bursary scales at the North-West University and amounts to R150 000

UNC-CH Nutrition Obesity Research Center Summer Assistant

The Nutrition Obesity Research Center at UNC-CH, Nutrition Epidemiology Core is seeking part-time summer help with possible extension through the fall/winter school year. Job functions include work related to dietary assessments (performing dietary recalls, entering food records), updating dietary database information, other nutrition related research projects and some physical activity and body composition assessments.

Salary Range: $15.67/hr. to $26.15/hr.
Expected Hiring Range: $18.03/hr. to 19.23/hr.
Work Schedule/Location: 40-hour work week during the hours of 8:30a.m.-5:15p.m. Mon.-Fri. with one Saturday per month and one evening per week, with corresponding time off during week days/Public Health Center (10 Sunnybrook Road, Raleigh, NC)

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Nutrition and one year of experience as a nutritionist; or equivalent. Eligibility for certification as a Registered Dietitian.

Special Requirements: A valid driver's license and a "safe" driving record required. A criminal record check will be conducted.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a public health setting and knowledge of WIC programs preferred.

Duties: Assess WIC Program applicants' and participants' nutritional needs and eligibility based on anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and socioeconomic data; develop plan of care, provide individualized nutrition counseling, document information on electronic care plans and medical records and make appropriate referrals; work with team in providing nutrition education to groups of participants and consult with providers as needed.
