About the Food Shuttle:
Since 1989, the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle (IFFS), in the belief that hunger is unacceptable, alleviates hunger by developing systems to recover, prepare and distribute wholesome, perishable food for the area's poor, hungry, undernourished and homeless neighbors.





The IFFS’ most recent grant, “Empowering Healthy Food Choices,” consists of the development, implementation, and expansion of two key programs: the Young Farmer Training Program (YFTP) and Operation Frontline, a cooking-based nutrition education program. Through the proposed Young Farmer Training Program (YFTP), the Food Shuttle plans to train and equip youth with tools and education around the trade and importance of local food systems so that they can become advocates in their own communities. The YFTP will provide extensive farm and agriculture training focusing on sustainable vegetable production and community gardens as well as nutrition and local food advocacy training.

General Function:

Under the supervision of the Director of Nutrition, Farms & Gardens and in keeping with the mission of the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, the Young Farmer Training Program Coordinator will be a part of the Farm & Garden team and will be responsible for planning, implementing, and coordinating this new program, focusing primarily on youth recruitment and management, curricula development, and sustainability.

Qualifications & Skills:

General farming and agriculture experience and/or education
Curricula development experience required
Education/youth instruction experience preferred
Demonstration of initiative; prioritization, and organizational skills
Experience in the management and supervision of youth
Basic Microsoft Office skills
Ability to coordinate all pieces of multi-component program
Networking, communication skills; experience working with team of partners
Grant writing experience preferred
Program evaluation experience preferred


Principal Responsibilities:

Coordinate with IFFS Nutrition, Farm & Garden team to create synergy between all elements of grant program
Create advisory board (including youth); plan and lead board meetings
Using existing and new material, develop curricula for program
Coordinate & plan details of program, including but not limited to timeline, field trips, guest instructors, program guidelines & policies
Work with IFFS partners to recruit and retain youth interns
Create and implement evaluation plan
Manage and complete grant reporting & records
Assist IFFS staff in leading instruction
Oversee, manage, and mentor youth interns
Work with IFFS partners, including AHA, CEFS, TLC, etc to create Local Regional Food Policy Council
Create new partnerships; Serve as liaison between IFFS and partners for YFTP
Develop and oversee mini-grants for graduates to work with IFFS and build new community gardens or implement other local food project

Essential Function:

Position requires manual dexterity, corrected vision, speech, and hearing to normal range or special accommodations made of sufficient nature for completion of assigned tasks. Will require outdoor activity including farming and gardening, lifting weight up to 25 pounds, and physical interactivity with children. Hours will include some evenings and weekend work, based on youth availability, weather, growing season, and program schedule. Valid NC Driver’s license required. Applicant must have reliable transportation with willingness and ability to drive.

Performance Evaluation Criteria:

The Young Farmer Training Program Coordinator will be evaluated according to his/her effectiveness in carrying out specific job responsibilities, efficiency in the delivery of services and achievement of established program and individual goals.
