Farm to School Coordinator

ORGANIZATION SUMMARY
The Center for Human Nutrition is dedicated to the promotion of human health and well-being through nutrition by providing scientific expertise and technical assistance in areas of childhood obesity prevention, anti-hunger, local food systems and health, and survey development and program evaluation. The Center also submits grants and contracts, both locally and federally, to build the research infrastructure at the local, state, and national levels.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead and carry out feasibility study and needs assessment for Farm to School programs.
• Connect farmers and food cooperatives with Nebraska consumers, including distributors, schools, retailers, childcare centers and other settings.
• Research and promote procurement practices & policies in 10 pilot sites in the Omaha Public School Districts.
• Provide training and technical assistance for food service staff and public health officials.
• Develop linkages with national Farm to School Network and other professional food and nutrition associations to help promote locally grown foods in schools and public institutions.
• Help coordinate Farm to School research opportunities to advance evidence-based programs.
• Seek and secure new funding for the initiative where applicable.
• Identify publications, trainings, and marketing materials associated with the Farm to School efforts.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition or a closely related discipline.
• Experience with nutrition education programs that engage diverse audiences including low-income youth and adults.
• Experience in writing and managing grants and reports.
• Demonstrated ability to contribute successfully to long term projects involving multiple constituent groups.
• Knowledge of and productive experience working with diverse and multicultural audiences.
• Experience in development of outreach strategies and marketing tools to reach a variety of audiences.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience in project management.
• Proficiency in computer skills in a networked environment.
• Ability to work independently.

SALARY
Commensurate with experience and education.

TRAVEL

Setting: Our public health department has a progressive Nutrition and Health Education Department offering Medical Nutrition Therapy, ADA Certified Diabetes Program, Weight Management programs, WIC supplemental nutrition and education program as well as Health Promotion programming in the school and community. Description of Work: The primary responsibility of this position is to provide nutrition counseling for pregnant women, infants, and preschool children, breastfeeding education, school and community health promotion, and medical nutrition therapy. This is a full time position but job sharing will be considered.

Minimum Education and Experience: Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetics Registration; or Master’s degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition, or Nutrition; or graduation from a Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education – approved Didactic Program in Dietetics and two years nutrition experience; or Dietetic Technician, Registered with the Commission on Dietetics Registration with a Bachelor’s degree in any subject area from an accredited four-year college or university and two years nutrition experience; or a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Community Nutrition from an accredited four-year college or university and two years nutrition experience. Individuals meeting the academic requirements but without the experience requirement will still be considered.

The Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA) seeks a Communications Coordinator

Washington Youth Garden seeks an Education Intern

Location: Washington, D.C.

Using the garden cycle as a tool, the mission of the Washington Youth Garden at the U.S. National Arboretum is to inspire children and families to engage in selfdiscovery, explore relationships with food and the natural world, and contribute to the health and well-being of their communities.

The Washington Youth Garden, a project of the Friends of the National Arboretum (FONA), is a one-acre organic garden featuring production area, herb garden, fruit section, butterfly garden, and themed educational gardens located on the grounds of the U.S. National Arboretum (USNA). WYG offers year-round gardening and nutrition education through one school based program and three outdoor garden programs: Garden Science, SPROUT, Growing Food…Growing Together, and Seed to Supper.

Responsibilities
The Education Intern is responsible for assisting with the development and facilitation of gardening and nutrition education activities for the Growing Food…Growing Together and Seed to Supper programs. The intern is also expected to learn general organic gardening techniques and provide some assistance with the maintenance of the garden. An approved individual project must be developed and presented by the intern during the course of the summer. The intern works closely with WYG, FONA, and USNA staff, program participants, volunteers, and parents.

Qualifications
Degree or comparable experience in Education, Environmental Studies, Biology, or another related field. Experience working with children and young adults in an outdoor setting.

General knowledge and interest in vegetable gardening and food, good communication skills, creativity, willingness and enthusiasm to learn
about the youth gardening movement and help children master basic gardening skills are expected.

Musical, theatrical, and arts and crafts experience is helpful.

First Aid/CPR certification is a plus. Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions and lift 50 lbs.

Time Commitment
35 hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday. Mid-June through mid- August 2010. Flexible start and end dates. Eight weeks minimum.

Compensation
A $2,500 stipend is available. Salary is subject to FICA and income taxes. University credits could be fulfilled depending upon individual’s course of study.

Roots of Change seeks a Communications Manager

Location: San Francisco, California

Roots of Change (ROC) is a non-profit organization working to create a sustainable food system in California by the year 2030. We want every aspect of our food, from the time it’s grown to the time it’s eaten, to be healthy for consumers and the planet, and profitable and fair for those who grow it. ROC’s role is to connect and support the people and parts within the system that have the knowledge, roles, relationships and commitments required to successfully manage a rapid transformation.

The primary focus of the Communications Manager is to rapidly increase the number of Californians who are in ROC’s network of “Concerned Citizens” and provide them with information that motivates them to act to create change. These actions can include sustainable food choices, political pressure, financial support, volunteering, and attending events. A key focus will be showcasing the engagement opportunities offered by other organizations working for sustainable food. The Communications Manager will use a variety of online channels including email, ROC’s website, online campaigns, Facebook and Twitter. Other channels include media relations and printed materials. The Communications Manager reports to the Director of Operations and supports the work of ROC’s other staff as needed.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Create and manage a long-term plan for communications and update the plan each quarter.
2. Research, create, and manage creation of content for email, web, Facebook, and Twitter, and manage the regular delivery of messages.
3. Conduct research and provide analysis of online activity. Create a dashboard of key online metrics and generate weekly and quarterly reports.
4. Conduct regular editorial review meetings and coordinate with other staff to maximize the effectiveness of all of ROC’s external communication.
5. Manage online campaigns (including Food Declaration) and related cross promotion with other organizations.
6. Manage and segment email database of the “Concerned Citizens.”
7. Set up and manage systems that encourage people to contribute information and connect with each other.
8. Manage the structure of the database for board members and other core connections and create templates for emails to these groups.
9. Manage communications with press and bloggers, and research and record coverage.
10. Manage the development of print materials.
11. Occasionally represent ROC at public events.
Other responsibilities will be added depending on the evolving requirements of the position.

Farm Fresh Rhode Island seeks a Program Coordinator

Farm Fresh Rhode Island is seeking a Program Coordinator for our Healthy Foods, Healthy Families program.

This position is 20-25 hours a week from mid June through October 2010. If other funding comes in we may be able to keep this person on staff during the late fall/winter, but that is to be determined. The Program Coordinator will work directly with Farm Fresh RI’s Program Director and Outreach Director to implement Healthy Foods, Healthy Families.

The Healthy Foods, Healthy Families program offers a curriculum of nutrition education through fun, interactive activities for both parent and child. The curriculum also includes cooking demonstrations featuring healthy recipes and sampling of fresh produce. Low-income families, identified through their participation in WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infant, and Children) or SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), sign up at the farmers market for the program. They commit to at least three weeks of the curriculum. Families receive a new item to help them use more fruits and veggies for each week they complete:

* Week 1: Recipe book (PDF) in Spanish and English
* Week 2: Canvas shopping bag
* Week 3: $25 in Fresh Bucks (coins that can be used to purchase fruits and vegetables at farmers’ markets).

From July 13 to September 26, the Healthy Foods, Healthy Families program will be offered in English and Spanish to low-income families every week at these markets. Every WIC and EBT client is welcome to participate and can sign up the same day right at the market:

The Program Coordinator must:

Future Harvest seeks Program Coordinator

Location: Mid-Atlantic Region, location TBD

Availability: April 2010

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or higher is required. Masters degree or relevant professional experience strongly preferred. Highly organized; event planning and promotions skills; excellent computer, writing and communication skills; and attention to detail are essential for this position. Experience with grant applications and/or management, and strategic planning would be a plus for any candidate.

General Overview: The Program Coordinator will be responsible for planning, promoting, executing and evaluating the annual conference in January, as well as two to four field days. This position will also be in charge of member communications and outreach, and will handle all day-to-day activities of the organization. In addition, the Program Coordinator will be responsible for seeking and applying for grants, and developing a fundraising program to cover costs into the future, as defined by the strategic planning process.

Objectives and Duties:
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

1. Oversee and orchestrate the conference planning process, working closely with the volunteer conference planning committee.
2. Create and distribute marketing materials for the conference, including save-the-date flyers, advertising brochures, and the conference program. Create print ads for strategic publications.
3. Plan, advertise and carry out educational field days for members. Includes working with PASA Education Coordinator to organize and carry out the jointly supported field days already planned for 2010.
4. Participate in the 2010 strategic planning process, helping to create a vision and action plan for the organization, consistent with Future Harvest-CASA’s overall mission. Implement action plan.
5. Develop, promote and maintain membership, with specific goals of increasing membership throughout the Chesapeake region, as defined through strategic planning process. Includes participating in targeted outreach opportunities.
6. Develop fundraising program and apply for grants to fund core work for the next three years, as defined through strategic planning process.
7. Create content and layout of quarterly e-newsletter, announcing upcoming events and membership news.
8. Update sustainable agriculture resource print materials and publications for members. Develop new materials as needed.
9. Communicate regularly with Website Manager during website re-design and to keep the website up to date, sharing information about relevant events and classified postings.
10. Administrative tasks as necessary.
11. Manage volunteer assistance, as opportunities arise.

Residency: Candidates for this part-time position must be able to work either out of their home office, or at designated office, location TBD. There is potential for this position to become a full-time salaried position in the future, but initially this position is 20-25 hours/week.

SEEDlings seeks a Co-Coordinator

Location: Durham, North Carolina

The SEEDlings Co-coordinator works with the other co-coordinator to plan and implement programs for the SEEDlings after-school program and Summer SEEDlings, programs of SEEDS, an educational garden in downtown Durham, NC.

SEEDlings is an after-school program which teaches children healthy living skills and appreciation for the natural world while having fun, in a garden context. The program’s goals include: to be a safe place for children after school and to teach respect for all people and other living things. During their time in the program, our goals for the kids are: to learn where food comes from; about healthy eating; to learn to care for themselves, others and the environment; and to learn discipline and how to work together. Daily activities focus on gardening, nature, exercise, and nutrition–indoors in our multipurpose room and kitchen and outdoors in our 1 ½ acre Southside Garden. Each day (3:30-5:45 pm) includes a healthy snack (sometimes prepared by the children) and homework time. The program serves children in 1st through 5th grade and is provided at a low cost to families.

Summer SEEDlings is four weeks of half-day camp indoors in our multipurpose room and kitchen and outdoors in our 1 ½ acre Southside Garden. Camp hours are 8 am – noon, Monday – Friday for kids completing 1st – 5th grades. The program’s goals include: to teach respect for all people and other living things; to teach where food comes from and about healthy eating; and to teach youth to care for themselves, others and the environment. Activities in Summer SEEDlings include: gardening, cooking, martial arts, dance, environmental experiments, games, nature crafts, weaving, caring for garden creatures and water play. The 2009 weekly themes were: Bountiful Birds, Fun, Food and Fantastic Fabrics, NC Animals of the Garden, and You Are What You Eat.

The SEEDlings Co-coordinator is responsible for the following:

School year SEEDlings Program:

* Plan 2-3 educational, movement and creative programs per week for 12 children in activities such as gardening, cooking, appreciating nature, and caring for the environment.
* Coordinate homework time utilizing up to 10 volunteers per day.
* Coordinate with special volunteers/volunteer groups who come to provide intermittent programming (such as nutritionists, environmental educators, university clubs, etc.).

Summer SEEDlings Program:

* Plan 2 weeks of theme-based half-day camps.
* Lead indoor and outdoor activities for up to 16 kids.
* Recruit, train, and supervise volunteer camp counselors.

Both Programs:

* Create brochures and registration materials and get them translated into Spanish.
* Communicate with parents.
* Plan field trips.
* Plan measurable objectives and implement program evaluation.
* Purchase program supplies and snack food.
* Create and follow budget.
* Write articles for SEEDS’ bi-annual newsletter, monthly e-newsletter, and quarterly board reports.
* Take photos of activities.
* Maintain cleanliness of SEEDlings areas in the building and garden.

The successful candidate will:

* Have 3-5 years experience working with elementary age children,
* Have gardening interest and experience,
* Have cooking interest and experience,
* Have experience with environmental education and/or nature studies,
* Have strong communication skills and sense of humor,
* Be self-motivated, independent and willing to work as part of a team.

The position’s hours are 25 hours per week. An additional 10 hours per week as Volunteer Coordinator are available to the SEEDlings co-coordinator. The salary starts at $12 per hour. With 30 or more hours per week, an employee receives full health insurance.

Duties and Responsibilities

This is a 12-month tenure-accruing position that will be 60% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment
Station) and 40% teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences), available in the Food Science
and Human Nutrition Department, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), at the University
of Florida. The candidate will be expected to have expertise in nutrition and metabolism with a focus on
metabolic disease including obesity and diabetes and to fill departmental, IFAS-wide, and UF-wide gaps
in research including carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, food intake regulation, metabolomics,
proteomics, and/or nutrigenomics. Expertise in human nutrition and metabolism is essential. The
incumbent will utilize molecular, cellular, and/or animal models in research that addresses major
research questions related to obesity, diabetes and the metabolic syndrome, and/or other disorders
related to carbohydrate or lipid metabolism. Teaching effort will contribute to the graduate curriculum
related to carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. The faculty member will participate actively in
undergraduate education and advising, chairing graduate committees, serving on graduate committees,
supervising thesis and dissertation research, and supervising undergraduate and postdoctoral research.
This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. All IFAS faculty are expected to
demonstrate commitment and responsibility to the research, education, and extension functions of the
Land Grant mission.

Qualifications

Candidates are sought with interests and broad training in nutritional sciences along with molecular
biology, metabolism, or physiology. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. or comparable degree
with postdoctoral experience, demonstrating a record of superior accomplishment and the ability to

collaborative support to a growing cohort of researchers on campus who have recently been provided
organizational frameworks including the UF Diabetes Center for Excellence and a UF Learning
Community in Obesity. The successful candidate will also be expected to work collaboratively with and
provide strength to the UF Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, the Institute on Aging, and/or
the UF Genetics Institute. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system.
Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global
involvement, and accountability.

Background Information

Strengths in Nutritional Sciences at UF include micronutrient research and molecular nutrition and a
significant group of federally funded researchers with a rich history of national research awards. The
Food Science and Human Nutrition Department is a unit of the College of Agricultural and Life
Sciences. The department has approximately 30 full-time faculty engaged in teaching, research, and
extension activities. The undergraduate student enrollment is over 650. The graduate program enrolls
over 100 M.S. and Ph.D. students in Nutritional Sciences, Dietetics, and Food Science. The PhD degree
program in Nutritional Sciences is an interdisciplinary program with participating faculty from the
Colleges of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Medicine, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Veterinary
Medicine. Emphasis areas include basic nutritional sciences, biochemistry and molecular biology,
genetics, immunology, physiology, and biostatistics http://nutritionalsciences.centers.ufl.edu. The
department has a strong interdisciplinary nature and there is great opportunity for unique collaborations.

Location Description
This is an area position covering the Southeast Area, Albany, Carbon, Laramie, Platte, and Goshen
Counties. The position will be based in Rawlins, Wyoming. Carbon County is located in the south-
central portion of Wyoming and is the third largest county in Wyoming. With an area of 7,896
square miles, the county population is 15,638. Rawlins, the county seat, has a population of 8,538.
Carbon County’s southern boundary is the Wyoming/Colorado border. The county is a study of con-
trasts – from snow-capped mountains and high plateaus in the south and north, to vast prairie lands
in the east and the Red Desert Basin in the west.

Nature and purpose
Emphasis for this position is to provide nutrition and food safety education to assist Wyoming
citizens in making wise nutrition and health decisions and safe food-handling practices. Training in
human nutrition, food science, dietetics, family and consumer sciences education, and food safety
will be important credentials.

Responsibilities
The individual in this position will work as a local representative of the University of Wyoming
(UW), maintain a working relationship with county commissioners, utilize advisory committees and
other input to determine needs. Primary duties include but are not limited to: provide educational
programming in the nutrition and food safety initiative in a five county area in collaboration with
the other area NFS educator; plan and implement applied research activities in collaboration with
UW faculty and/or Extension specialists; provide expertise and leadership for portions of the 4-H
and youth program; work as a team member with the entire county staff to provide innovative educa-
tional opportunities in all Extension program areas; cooperate with other agencies and organizations;
use available media to educate the public and to publicize programs and activities; support general
County Extension operations. Some overnight travel, evening, and weekend work is required. Please
note: this position is based in Rawlins, Wyoming.

Qualifications – Required
A master’s degree from an accredited college or university or a
bachelor’s degree plus registered dietetics certification. One de-
gree must have been awarded in nutrition, food science, dietet-

accomplish individual and group goals, applicants must have
demonstrated skills as indicated by experience and references
in working with individuals, groups, and coworkers. Excellence
in the ability to communicate verbally and in writing demon-

The Sanford Center for Aging is a free-standing center devoted to aging-focused research,
education, and community outreach. The Center is anticipated to become the central locus of

includes a new 6,000 ft. sq. clinical education center, additional administrative and support space
and a substantial endowment. The director will report to the vice president of the division of
health sciences. The director will lead efforts to advance campus research and practice in

recruiting staff and faculty affiliates and for the academic, clinical, and financial success of the
Sanford Center. The director will also pursue and maintain a program of extramurally funded,

Required qualifications include: A doctorate in medicine, nursing, or a social or behavioral
science and a substantial record of research and scholarship in aging that merits tenure in the
department of the director’s discipline, if awarded, on appointment. Preferred qualifications
include: a history of accomplishment in programmatic research, success in obtaining and
administering external research funding as a principal investigator, a documented record of
sound administrative skills, and an interest for and ability to mentor and develop junior faculty

Manage insurance process for general and liquor liability for A Tasteful Pursuit platform and additional culinary events.

Assist Senior Manager with ensuring successful fulfillment of on-site contract deliverables of corporate partners relating to A Tasteful Pursuit.

Manages A Tasteful Pursuit records in Raiser’s Edge, entering chefs, venues and auction donors. Sends acknowledgements for attendees, chefs, auction donors and other in-kind contributors.

Act as the team’s liaison to the Culinary and Field Team. Share event calendar with this team regularly and update A Tasteful Pursuit team.

Other duties as required and assigned.

o 20% travel varying throughout the year.

EDUCATION/
BACKGROUND:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.

Experience with Raiser’s Edge or Convio preferred but not required.

Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County (MOWI) is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit charitable organization, and has operated independently in Tarrant County since 1973, providing hot, nourishing meals to elderly and disabled persons who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. For the fourth year in a row, MOWI is offering a summer work internship opportunity for Dietetic/Nutrition students, graduates, or graduate students. Last year MOWI received 25 applications from students on campuses all over the country with MOWI accepting nine applicants representing the following colleges: Oklahoma State University; Loma Linda University; University of Kentucky; University of Dayton; Texas Woman’s University; University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff; Texas Tech University, and University of Central Michigan. Previous MOWI interns have come from the following universities: The University of Texas at Austin; Texas A&M University; Oklahoma State University; Texas Christian University; Oregon State University; University of Texas-Pan American and University of Texas, Southwestern Dallas Campus. The selected student(s)/graduate(s) will work one on one with three tenured, experienced, MOWI employed, Registered/Licensed Dietitians in the area of community dietetics and geriatric nutrition. The dates, days, and hours of work can be flexible but require a commitment of at least 20 hours per week for 6 weeks or more, for a minimum of 120 hours in total within MOWI regular operating hours of : Monday-Thursday, 8:00a-4:30p and Friday, 8:00a-3:30p. The student(s) may gain experience in one or all of the following areas of dietetics, nutrition and business management: menu development, research design and reporting, client counseling, foodservice management, development of written nutrition education publications, client satisfaction survey design and reporting, food time and temperature studies, report writing, geriatric nutrition practices, in-home nutritional assessments, and nutrition committee work. This is a non-paid position with no stipends for living expenses. The applicant will need to secure their own housing arrangements within the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and must have their own reliable transportation as well as a laptop computer. However, any mileage or other out of pocket expenses related to performing specific job duties will be reimbursed. This opportunity has been very beneficial to past summer interns by giving them the much needed nutrition/dietetic experience prerequisite required/requested by most internship, coordinated, or graduate school programs.
