Duties and Responsibilities

This is a 12-month tenure-accruing position that will be 60% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment
Station) and 40% teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences), available in the Food Science
and Human Nutrition Department, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), at the University
of Florida. The candidate will be expected to have expertise in nutrition and metabolism with a focus on
metabolic disease including obesity and diabetes and to fill departmental, IFAS-wide, and UF-wide gaps
in research including carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, food intake regulation, metabolomics,
proteomics, and/or nutrigenomics. Expertise in human nutrition and metabolism is essential. The
incumbent will utilize molecular, cellular, and/or animal models in research that addresses major
research questions related to obesity, diabetes and the metabolic syndrome, and/or other disorders
related to carbohydrate or lipid metabolism. Teaching effort will contribute to the graduate curriculum
related to carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. The faculty member will participate actively in
undergraduate education and advising, chairing graduate committees, serving on graduate committees,
supervising thesis and dissertation research, and supervising undergraduate and postdoctoral research.
This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. All IFAS faculty are expected to
demonstrate commitment and responsibility to the research, education, and extension functions of the
Land Grant mission.

Qualifications

Candidates are sought with interests and broad training in nutritional sciences along with molecular
biology, metabolism, or physiology. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. or comparable degree
with postdoctoral experience, demonstrating a record of superior accomplishment and the ability to

sustain an extramurally funded research program. The incumbent will provide leadership and
collaborative support to a growing cohort of researchers on campus who have recently been provided
organizational frameworks including the UF Diabetes Center for Excellence and a UF Learning
Community in Obesity. The successful candidate will also be expected to work collaboratively with and
provide strength to the UF Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, the Institute on Aging, and/or
the UF Genetics Institute. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system.
Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global
involvement, and accountability.

Background Information

Strengths in Nutritional Sciences at UF include micronutrient research and molecular nutrition and a
significant group of federally funded researchers with a rich history of national research awards. The
Food Science and Human Nutrition Department is a unit of the College of Agricultural and Life
Sciences. The department has approximately 30 full-time faculty engaged in teaching, research, and
extension activities. The undergraduate student enrollment is over 650. The graduate program enrolls
over 100 M.S. and Ph.D. students in Nutritional Sciences, Dietetics, and Food Science. The PhD degree
program in Nutritional Sciences is an interdisciplinary program with participating faculty from the
Colleges of Agricultural and Life Sciences, Medicine, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Veterinary
Medicine. Emphasis areas include basic nutritional sciences, biochemistry and molecular biology,
genetics, immunology, physiology, and biostatistics http://nutritionalsciences.centers.ufl.edu. The
department has a strong interdisciplinary nature and there is great opportunity for unique collaborations.
Within walking distance are superb opportunities to participate in translational research with the Clinical
and Translational Science Institute and collaborate with faculty from the Colleges of Medicine, Health
and Human Performance, Public Health, Pharmacy, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and
Agricultural and Life Sciences. The Center for Nutritional Sciences sponsors a vibrant seminar series.
The University’s Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research provides research support
laboratories for proteomics, genomics, bioinformatics, and cellomics.

Senior Vice President and four deans: the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the
Dean for Extension and Director of the Florida Cooperative Extension Service, the Dean for Research
and Director of the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Dean for the College of Veterinary
Medicine. UF/IFAS also engages in cooperative work with Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.
