The Department of Human Nutrition and Hospitality Management at the University of Alabama
is seeking a dedicated professional to serve as Department Head.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES SPECIFIC TO THE POSITION
The successful candidate will be the chief administrative officer of the Department with
responsibilities including the following:
• Supervise all budgetary and promotion decisions
• Provide leadership and advocacy for teaching, research and outreach activities that
articulate with the mission of the Department, College and University
• Coordinate the graduate program in Human Nutrition
• Instruct graduate and undergraduate level courses
• Direct theses and dissertations
• Obtain external funding to support a nationally competitive research program
QUALIFICATIONS
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with faculty, staff,
students and university constituents
• Doctoral degree in Nutrition or a closely related field
• Qualifications to be employed as a tenured associate or full professor level
• Administrative experience
• Strong record of scholarship that includes external funding
• Familiarity with accreditation standards for all programs of the Department
• Previous experience mentoring junior faculty
• Previous experience in distance education, desirable
• Registered dietitian, desirable
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department is one of five departments in the College of Human Environmental Sciences
(CHES) at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It is currently the largest
department in the College and continues its expansion by reporting increasing annual student
enrollment for the past decade. The department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Food
and Nutrition (Coordinated and Didactic Programs in Dietetics) and Restaurant, Hotel, and
Meetings Management, a Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition, a specialization in
Restaurant, Hotel, and Meetings Management in the Master of Science degree in General
Studies, and a nutrition specialization within the Ph.D. in Health Education and Health
Promotion. The bachelor’s degree in Restaurant, Hotel, and Meetings Management and the
master’s degrees in both areas are offered through distance education as well as residential.
SALARY: Competitive, based on experience STARTING DATE: August 16, 2010
