University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension position

Position Title
Assistant University Extension Educator for Nutrition and Food Safety, Position # 1281, Carbon County, Rawlins, Wyoming.

Level and Salary
Assistant level, extended term track, actual salary commensurate with education and experience.

Location Description
This is an area position covering the Southeast Area, Albany, Carbon, Laramie, Platte, and Goshen Counties. The position will be based in Rawlins, Wyoming. Carbon County is located in the south-central portion of Wyoming and is the third largest county in Wyoming. With an area of 7,896 square miles, the county population is 15,638. Rawlins, the county seat, has a population of 8,538. Carbon County’s southern boundary is the Wyoming/Colorado border. The county is a study of contrasts – from snow-capped mountains and high plateaus in the south and north, to vast prairie lands in the east and the Red Desert Basin in the west.

Nature and purpose
Emphasis for this position is to provide nutrition and food safety education to assist Wyoming citizens in making wise nutrition and health decisions and safe food-handling practices. Training in human nutrition, food science, dietetics, family and consumer sciences education, and food safety will be important credentials.

Responsibilities
The individual in this position will work as a local representative of the University of Wyoming (UW), maintain a working relationship with county commissioners, utilize advisory committees and other input to determine needs. Primary duties include but are not limited to: provide educational programming in the nutrition and food safety initiative in a five county area in collaboration with the other area NFS educator; plan and implement applied research activities in collaboration with UW faculty and/or Extension specialists; provide expertise and leadership for portions of the 4-H and youth program; work as a team member with the entire county staff to provide innovative educational opportunities in all Extension program areas; cooperate with other agencies and organizations; use available media to educate the public and to publicize programs and activities; support general County Extension operations. Some overnight travel, evening, and weekend work is required. Please note: this position is based in Rawlins, Wyoming.

Primary Clientele served by this Position
1. Citizens dealing with issues that require expertise and/or direction in nutrition, food safety and wellness issues.
2. Public school teachers, nurses, physicians, and nutrition professionals.
3. Youth and adult audiences including 4-H/youth programs.
4. Food service personnel and professionals working in food safety.

Qualifications – Required
A master’s degree from an accredited college or university or a bachelor’s degree plus registered dietetics certification. One degree must have been awarded in nutrition, food science, dietetics, family and consumer sciences education, or cognate field clearly and specifically related to the Extension function. To accomplish individual and group goals, applicants must have demonstrated skills as indicated by experience and references in working with individuals, groups, and coworkers. Excellence in the ability to communicate verbally and in writing demonstrated by formal training, experience, and application material. Ability to work with limited supervision. A valid driver’s license and serviceable vehicle. A commitment to travel throughout rural communities. The selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a Wyoming State Department of Family Services Central Registry Screen as a condition of employment. This screening will be required every five years.

Qualifications – Preferred
• Knowledge of Cooperative Extension and the land-grant university system.
• Knowledge and appreciation for rural and agricultural communities.
• Training and/or expertise in Nutrition, Food Safety, or Health and Wellness topics.
• Ability and necessary expertise to work with diverse audiences in the area of nutrition and food safety.
• Computer literacy.
• Prior Extension experience.

Nutrition and Food Safety 85%
4-H & Youth 15%
