Position Title:
Child Nutrition Registered Dietitian
Reports to:
Child Nutrition Director
Supervises:
Does not supervise, but works with all Child Nutrition Staff.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required:
Knowledge of the principles of sound nutrition, special diets, and requirements of Child Nutrition Programs. Ability to implement requirements, maintain accurate records and to communicate and work effectively with others. Ability to provide diet instruction and counseling to students.
Education, Training Required:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutrition and certification as a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of The American Dietetic Association. Must be licensed with the state of North Carolina to practice Dietetics.
Term of Employment:
Twelve months
Responsibilities:
1. Assist in developing menus for the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs.
2. Analyze menus for nutritional content and make recommendations for healthier choices.
3. Modify menus for students with specific conditions (example: Diabetes Mellitus, Obesity) with the consent of the child’s physician.
4. Provide nutrition education programs for children in all Pitt County Schools.
5. Provide in-service programs on various areas of nutrition and foodservice production for all cafeteria managers, assistant managers, and staff
6. Promote the National School Lunch Program and the National School Breakfast Program throughout all schools and the community.
7. Develop nutrition education materials for students and teachers.
8. Determine monthly Taste Explorer items for sampling and develop information handouts for teachers, activity worksheets for students, and nutrition analysis on those items.
9. Work in collaboration with community organizations (example: Pitt Partners for Health) to represent the Child Nutrition Department.
10. Assist schools in integrating physical activity and nutrition programs into current curriculum and program activities.
11. Support school administrators, teachers, support staff, parents, and community partners in efforts to build school environments that support healthy eating and physical activity.
12. Work collaboratively with other agencies involved in child wellness to identify available resources and help families access them.
13. Assist with presentations on the overall “Eat Smart, Move More” initiative to a variety of audiences, including educators, parents, and community organizations.
14. Assist with the development and collection of ongoing assessment and evaluation of information.
15. Complete the CN-3’s (Meal Production Records) monthly to send to the Child Nutrition Managers in each school.
